Introductory summary
Safe home support for someone in psychosis.
Home care supports professional treatment. It never replaces it. Get psychiatric help first.
How to respond to someone in psychosis
- Stay calm, speak gently and slowly, and use short sentences
- Do not argue with or laugh at delusions or voices. Say that you believe they find it real and frightening, without agreeing with the false belief.
- Do not confront, threaten or shout
- Reduce stimulation: a quiet place with low light and few people
- Never leave someone who is suicidal or may be violent alone
- Remove sharp objects, medicines and other hazards if there is a risk of self-harm
- Do not use physical force or restraint unless there is immediate danger, and call 112
Daily routines that help
- Regular sleep, meals and daily activity
- Avoid alcohol, cannabis and other drugs completely
- Keep a calm, low-stress home
- Support medicine use: keep a routine, use pill boxes and reminders
- Encourage gentle activity such as walking
- Keep follow-up appointments
Look after yourself, if you are a carer
- Rest and share care with others
- Seek support from family groups and counsellors
- Learn the early warning signs of relapse
What not to do
- Do not stop medicines or give unproven remedies
- Do not hide the person away or let them go without treatment
- Do not blame the person or family
