Diet and food guidance for psychosis
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Healthy eating and medicine-related food points.
Diet cannot treat psychosis, but good nutrition supports physical health, sleep and energy, and helps with the side effects of medicines.
Healthy eating
- Regular meals, with plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, pulses and protein
- Omega-3 foods such as fish, flaxseed and walnuts
- Enough water
- Fibre to help with constipation, which some medicines cause
Weight and metabolism
Some antipsychotic medicines increase appetite and weight, and raise the risk of diabetes and high cholesterol. Ask your doctor for regular checks of weight, blood sugar and cholesterol. Choose portions carefully, limit sweets and sugary drinks, and walk daily.
What to limit or avoid
- Alcohol and drugs, including cannabis, which worsen psychosis and interact with medicines
- Excess caffeine, which can worsen anxiety and sleep
- Highly processed and sugary food
- Smoking
Medicine-related food points
- Grapefruit and some herbal products can interact with certain medicines
- With clozapine, caffeine and smoking changes affect blood levels, so tell the doctor if habits change
- Do not start supplements without telling your doctor
Nutrient checks
Vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D and thyroid problems can affect mood and thinking. A doctor can test for them.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Traditional advice favours light, wholesome, freshly cooked food and regular meal times. Evidence is limited.
When to get help
Tell your doctor if appetite, weight or blood sugar change.
Remember
Regular balanced meals, no alcohol or drugs, and regular health checks protect body and mind.
