Ayurvedic treatment for psychosis

Ayurveda describes severe disturbances of thought and behaviour under Unmada, which it links to aggravated doshas affecting the mind (Manas), stress, disturbed routines and poor mental hygiene. This is a traditional framework. Evidence that Ayurvedic treatments treat psychosis is very limited.

Psychiatric care comes first

Psychosis is a medical emergency in its acute phase. A psychiatrist should assess the person, and prescribed medicines should not be stopped or replaced by herbs. Some people can become dangerous to themselves or others, so safe treatment matters.

Traditional approaches sometimes used alongside care

• Routine and lifestyle (Dinacharya): regular sleep, meals and daylight
• Calming therapies such as gentle oil massage and Shirodhara, only under supervision and when the person is stable and agrees
• Meditation, pranayama and counselling for calm, once acute symptoms have settled
• Herbs such as Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Jatamansi and Shankhpushpi: used traditionally for the mind. Studies are small, and none replace antipsychotic medicines.

Cautions

• Never replace antipsychotics or mood stabilisers with herbs
• Some herbal and herbo-mineral products contain heavy metals, sedatives or hidden drugs
• Herbal products can interact with psychiatric medicines
• Avoid methods that restrain, beat or frighten the person, and avoid unproven rituals instead of treatment
• Avoid cannabis-based preparations, as they can worsen psychosis

Ayurveda is an interpretive, adjunct approach only. Psychiatric treatment is essential in psychosis.
