Introductory summary
Safety and health risks of psychosis.
Untreated or poorly treated psychosis can affect safety, health, relationships and daily life. Early treatment reduces these risks.
Risks to safety
- Suicide: the risk is higher in psychosis, especially in the early phase and after hospital discharge. Take any talk of suicide seriously.
- Self-harm and accidents, because of confusion and poor judgement
- Harm to others: this is uncommon, and most people with psychosis are not violent, but risk is higher with untreated command voices, severe delusions and substance use
Health complications
- Poor self-care, poor nutrition and sleep
- Substance and alcohol misuse
- Smoking-related and heart disease
- Weight gain, diabetes and high cholesterol, partly due to medicines
- Shorter life expectancy, mostly from physical illness
Life and social impact
- Loss of job, study and income
- Strained relationships and isolation
- Homelessness and legal problems
- Stigma and discrimination
Relapse
Stopping medicines raises the risk of relapse and can make later treatment harder.
Emergency: call 112
Talk of suicide or harming others, severe agitation, violence, or a person who cannot look after themselves. Tele-MANAS: 14416 or 1800-891-4416.
How to reduce complications
Early treatment, regular medicines, avoiding drugs, physical health checks and strong support.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Traditional texts warn that neglected Unmada worsens over time. This is an interpretive view and does not replace psychiatric care.
Remember
Treatment, safety planning and support greatly reduce the risks. Seek help early.
