Ayurvedic treatment for scabies

Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of scabies as support only, with safety notes.
Ayurveda describes scabies-like skin disease mainly as pama, a type of minor skin disease (kshudra kushtha) in which intense itching, tiny pustules and oozing are seen. In the traditional view, it is linked to aggravated Kapha and Pitta, impurity of blood and poor hygiene or damp conditions. This is an interpretive framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatment of scabies is limited, so it should only support proven treatment that kills the mite.
Traditional approach
- External use of neem (nimba), turmeric (haridra), sulphur-based preparations (gandhaka) and medicated oils on the skin.
- Internal herbs thought to purify the blood, such as manjistha, neem and khadira.
- Light, bitter and astringent food, and avoiding sour, salty, fermented and heavy foods.
- Strict cleanliness, with sun-drying of clothes and bedding.
What research says Some trials suggest that neem, turmeric and tea tree oil may reduce mites or itching in small studies, and sulphur ointment is an old, accepted treatment. However, evidence is limited, and herbal pastes may be less reliable than permethrin or ivermectin. Untreated scabies keeps spreading in the family.
Safety points
- Do not apply raw herbs, strong oils or acidic ingredients on cracked or infected skin.
- Patch-test any paste or oil.
- Avoid products that contain hidden steroids. Steroid creams may reduce itch but let the mites spread.
- Sulphur ointments can stain and smell strongly and should be used as advised, especially in babies.
- Take extra care in pregnancy, in babies and with liver or kidney disease before using herbs.
When to see a doctor See a doctor if itching continues after a week or two, if the rash spreads, or if there is pus, swelling or fever.
Remember Ayurveda may support comfort and hygiene, but scabies needs a medicine that kills the mite, for the whole household.
