Introductory summary
Viral sore throats need only paracetamol/ibuprofen and soothing measures; strep throat needs a full course of antibiotics like penicillin/amoxicillin from a doctor.
Medicines and products for throat infection
For viral sore throats (most cases): no antibiotics - they do not work on viruses. Treatment is symptom relief:
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever, in correct weight-based doses (especially for children).
- Throat lozenges and soothing syrups - mild relief for adults and older children; not for small children (choking risk).
- Throat sprays and gargle solutions - modest, short-lived comfort; saline gargles are as good and cheaper.
- Decongestants/antihistamines only if a cold or allergy drives the throat irritation.
For strep throat (bacterial): antibiotics are the treatment. Doctors typically prescribe penicillin or amoxicillin for 10 days (alternatives exist for penicillin allergy). The point is preventing rheumatic fever and kidney complications. Complete the full course - stopping early when pain settles lets the bacteria survive and complications remain possible. Never self-start leftover antibiotics, and never pressure a doctor for antibiotics for a viral illness; unnecessary antibiotics breed resistance.
For specific situations: peritonsillar abscess needs drainage plus antibiotics; epiglottitis is an ICU-level emergency; fungal throat infection (candida) needs antifungal medicine; severe mononucleosis sometimes needs steroids under supervision.
Products to be careful with:
- Aspirin: never for children/teens with viral illness (Reye's syndrome).
- Antibiotic "courses" sold without prescription - wrong drug, wrong duration, real harm.
- Herbal throat products are fine for comfort but are not antibiotics.
Remember: painkillers and comfort for viral; a full, doctor-prescribed antibiotic course for strep; no aspirin in children.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurvedic products can soothe but cannot sterilize a strep infection. Antibiotics, where indicated, are non-negotiable.
