Diet and food guidance for throat infection

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

During a throat infection choose soft, warm, easy-to-swallow foods and plenty of fluids; avoid very spicy, sour, crunchy items and very hot drinks.

Diet and food guidance for throat infection

No food cures a throat infection, but the right choices keep you nourished and hydrated while swallowing hurts - especially important for children, who can slip into dehydration when they refuse to eat and drink.

What helps:

  • Soft, moist, mild foods: khichdi, dal-rice, curd rice, porridge, soft idli, mashed potatoes, custards, soups, smoothies, mashed banana.
  • Warm (not hot) liquids: soups, dal water, warm turmeric milk, herbal teas - soothing and hydrating. Let hot drinks cool to comfortably warm.
  • Cold options can also soothe: curd, yogurt, ice cream or frozen fruit bars numb pain and many children accept them when refusing everything else - the old "cold causes sore throat" idea is a myth; comfort intake matters more.
  • Plenty of fluids overall: water, coconut water, oral fluids through the day. Watch children for drinking too little - dark urine, dry mouth and few wet nappies are warning signs.
  • Honey in warm water for those over 1 year - soothes between meals.

What to avoid while the throat is raw:

  • Very spicy, very sour (pickles, citrus juices if they sting) and very salty foods
  • Hard, crunchy, scratchy foods - chips, papad, dry toast
  • Very hot drinks and food
  • Alcohol and tobacco - both irritate inflamed tissue and delay healing

During recovery: return to a normal balanced diet as pain settles; protein (dal, eggs, milk) supports healing.

Remember: soft, warm, mild, plenty of fluids - and in children, fluid intake is the priority to watch.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Ayurvedic advice of warm, soft, light food during throat illness matches practical guidance. Cold-soothing is safe too - comfort, not dogma, is the rule.
