Introductory summary

Warm salt-water gargles, honey (over age 1), warm fluids, rest and simple painkillers ease most sore throats; antibiotics from a doctor are needed for strep.

Home remedies for throat infection

Most sore throats are viral and heal in under a week - home care is the treatment. These measures help:

  • Warm salt-water gargles: half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargled and spat out 3-4 times daily. Safe, cheap and genuinely soothing. For children old enough to gargle reliably.
  • Honey: a teaspoon straight or in warm water/tea coats and calms the throat, with decent evidence for easing cough and soreness. Never give honey to infants under 12 months - infant botulism risk.
  • Warm fluids: soups, dal water, herbal teas (tulsi, ginger, turmeric). Warmth soothes; avoid very hot drinks that scald.
  • Rest and voice rest: sleep supports immunity; avoid shouting and prolonged talking.
  • Simple painkillers: paracetamol or ibuprofen in correct doses ease pain and fever. Never give aspirin to children or teenagers with a viral illness - risk of Reye's syndrome.
  • Soft, easy-to-swallow foods: khichdi, curd rice, custard, mashed banana; avoid very spicy, sour or crunchy foods while swallowing hurts.
  • Humidify and avoid smoke: moist air eases raw throats; keep the patient away from tobacco smoke.

What home remedies cannot do: cure strep throat. If there is high fever, pus on the tonsils, tender neck glands and no cough, a doctor should decide on testing and antibiotics - the antibiotic course must be completed in full.

Children: no honey under 12 months, no aspirin, no steam inhalation, and see a doctor early for poor drinking, drooling or lethargy.

Remember: home care handles viral sore throats well; strep signs mean a doctor, and antibiotics once started are finished.

These remedies overlap with classical Ayurvedic practice for throat disorders - safe symptomatic care with clear boundaries, as above.
