Types of throat infection

Introductory summary

Throat infections are grouped by site (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis) and by cause (viral, bacterial strep, fungal), each with different urgency.

Types of throat infection

By site:

  • Pharyngitis: inflammation of the pharynx (the back of the throat) - the standard "sore throat", usually viral.
  • Tonsillitis: infection centred on the tonsils, with swelling, pain and often white exudate. Can be viral or strep.
  • Laryngitis: infection of the voice box - hoarseness or loss of voice dominates, usually viral and self-limiting.
  • Epiglottitis: infection of the flap guarding the airway - rare but an emergency: severe pain, drooling, muffled voice, breathing difficulty. Immediate hospital care.
  • Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy): a pus collection beside the tonsil after tonsillitis - one-sided severe pain, muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth; needs drainage and antibiotics.

By cause:

  • Viral: the majority - cold and flu viruses, adenovirus, EBV (infectious mononucleosis with severe prolonged sore throat and fatigue), COVID-19.
  • Bacterial: Group A Streptococcus is the key one (strep throat/scarlet fever); diphtheria is the dangerous, vaccine-preventable one.
  • Fungal (oral/throat candidiasis): white curd-like patches in people with weakened immunity, inhaled steroid use without rinsing, or recent antibiotics.

By course: acute (days) vs recurrent or chronic tonsillitis (repeated attacks over months), which sometimes leads to tonsillectomy discussions.

Remember: most types are mild and viral; epiglottitis and abscess are the dangerous types - their warning signs (drooling, muffled voice, one-sided swelling, breathing trouble) demand emergency care.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Ayurvedic texts classify throat diseases by dosha and site - an interpretive system. Modern classification by cause and site drives actual treatment.
