Introductory summary
Ayurvedic measures like warm salt-water gargles, turmeric and soothing herbs can ease a viral sore throat, but suspected strep needs antibiotics to prevent heart and kidney complications.
Ayurvedic treatment for throat infection
Ayurvedic and home-based measures genuinely help the common viral sore throat - which is most of them - by soothing inflamed tissue while the body clears the virus. What they cannot do is replace antibiotics for strep throat, because untreated strep can damage the heart (rheumatic fever) and kidneys. The sensible rule: use traditional comfort measures for mild illness, and get a doctor's evaluation when the picture suggests bacterial infection.
Measures with reasonable comfort value:
- Warm salt-water gargles (half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, several times a day) - simple, safe and soothing for adults and older children who can gargle.
- Turmeric milk or warm turmeric water - traditionally used for throat comfort; harmless for most adults.
- Honey in warm water or herbal tea soothes and coats the throat - never for infants under 12 months (risk of infant botulism).
- Tulsi, ginger and licorice (mulethi) teas - traditional soothing drinks; licorice can raise blood pressure if overused.
- Steam inhalation for associated congestion - adults only; never steam for children (scald risk).
- Rest the voice, warm (not hot) fluids, and soft foods.
When traditional measures are not enough: high fever with pus on the tonsils and no cough, severe one-sided pain or swelling, drooling, breathing difficulty, rash, or illness lasting beyond a week - these need a doctor, and strep needs a full antibiotic course. Never stop antibiotics midway because symptoms improved.
Remember: Ayurvedic comfort care suits viral sore throats; strep warning signs mean antibiotics, completed fully.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Classical kantha roga management - gargles, demulcent herbs, warm regimen - is reasonable symptomatic care within its limits, as described above. It complements, and never replaces, antibiotics where they are indicated.
