Prevention of ulcer

Introductory summary
Prevent ulcers by never self-medicating painkillers long-term, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, good food-and-water hygiene against H. pylori, and protecting the stomach when NSAIDs are truly needed.
Prevention of ulcer
Most ulcers are preventable, because most ulcers come from two identifiable sources - a bacterium and a drug habit.
Respect painkillers (the biggest avoidable cause in India):
- Never take NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac, aceclofenac, aspirin combinations) daily or long-term without a doctor's supervision
- Use the lowest dose for the shortest time; take them after food, never on an empty stomach
- If you genuinely need long-term pain relief (arthritis, chronic pain), ask the doctor about stomach-protective co-prescription (a PPI) or safer alternatives
- If you take daily low-dose aspirin for the heart, never stop it yourself - but do tell your doctor about any stomach symptoms
- Avoid combining multiple painkillers, and painkillers plus steroids, without medical advice
Against H. pylori:
- Safe drinking water and basic food hygiene reduce transmission, especially in children
- If a close family member had an ulcer or H. pylori, mention it if you develop symptoms - testing is simple
Habits that protect the lining:
- Quit smoking - smoking both raises ulcer risk and blocks healing
- Alcohol in strict moderation or not at all, especially with any history of acidity
- Regular meal times; avoid very long fasting gaps if you are prone to acidity
- Sensible limits on very spicy food if it reliably triggers your symptoms
If you already had an ulcer: complete eradication therapy, confirm eradication if the doctor asks, and stay off unsupervised NSAIDs - most "recurrences" are really incomplete eradication or resumed painkillers.
Remember: two preventions cover most ulcers - discipline with painkillers and hygiene against H. pylori - plus no smoking and restrained alcohol.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurvedic prevention for Amlapitta - regular meals, moderate tastes, restrained stimulants - reads as sound lining-protective habit advice. Add modern painkiller discipline and H. pylori hygiene to complete the picture.
