Ayurvedic treatment for ulcer

Introductory summary
Ayurveda frames ulcer as Amlapitta and offers acid-calming diet and herbs like yashtimadhu; these may soothe symptoms but cannot eradicate H. pylori - antibiotics plus acid suppression cure the ulcer.
Ayurvedic treatment for ulcer
Ayurveda's closest counterpart to the peptic ulcer is Amlapitta - a pitta disorder marked by acid regurgitation, burning and indigestion. Its traditional management has two arms, and it is worth being honest about what each can and cannot do.
The traditional arm (what Ayurveda offers):
- Pathya (suitable diet): small, frequent, mildly flavoured meals; cooling foods like milk (in those who tolerate it), rice gruel, moong dal, coconut water; avoiding deep-fried, very spicy, very sour and fermented foods during symptoms
- Classical herbs: yashtimadhu (liquorice), shatavari, amalaki (amla), guduchi and gulkand are traditionally used for acid soothing; some formulations like Avipattikar churna are common for acidity
- Panchakarma procedures such as virechana are described in classical texts for pitta conditions
The honest limits: there is no good clinical evidence that any Ayurvedic herb or procedure eradicates H. pylori or heals a deep ulcer reliably. Liquorice derivatives have some supportive evidence for symptom relief, but symptom relief is not cure - an H. pylori ulcer whose burning is merely soothed can still progress to bleeding.
The safe way to combine both:
- Get the modern diagnosis first - H. pylori test, and endoscopy if the doctor advises
- Complete the eradication/acid-suppression course fully - this cures most ulcers
- Use Ayurvedic dietary discipline and, if you wish, traditional soothing herbs alongside as supportive care, discussed openly with your doctor
- Watch for interactions: some churnas contain heavy-metal bhasmas or high salt loads; tell your doctor everything you take
Never: stop prescribed antibiotics mid-course to switch to herbs, or treat black stools/vomiting with home preparations.
Remember: Ayurvedic diet and soothing herbs can support comfort and recovery; only the antibiotic-plus-acid-suppressant course eradicates H. pylori and cures the ulcer. Use both wisely, modern treatment first.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Amlapitta chikitsa is a coherent traditional system for acid disorders. Framed correctly, it complements - never replaces - eradication therapy for a bacterium it was never designed to detect.
