Stages of warts

Introductory summary
Most warts clear on their own within two years - the natural life cycle is why patience is sometimes the treatment.
Warts do not follow formal medical stages, but they have a natural life cycle worth knowing - because most warts end by disappearing on their own, and that fact shapes every treatment decision.
Stage 1 - infection and incubation. HPV enters through a small skin break and settles into the top skin layer. Nothing is visible for weeks to months while the virus multiplies quietly.
Stage 2 - appearance and growth. A small rough bump appears and enlarges over weeks to its characteristic size. It may stay single or, if scratched, shaved over or picked, seed nearby skin with satellite warts - the 'mother-daughter' pattern, especially in flat and plantar types.
Stage 3 - persistence. The wart sits unchanged for months. The immune system and the virus are in standoff. This is when most people seek treatment - for appearance, pain (plantar), or spread.
Stage 4 - immune clearance (the natural ending). In a large share of cases - about half within a year and most within two years, sooner in children - the immune system recognizes the virus and clears it. The wart darkens, dries and flakes away, usually leaving no scar. Warts in adults and in people with weak immunity clear less reliably.
The treatment implication: because spontaneous clearance is real, gentle patience is a legitimate strategy for painless, non-spreading warts - especially in children. Treatment makes sense when warts hurt, spread, embarrass, sit on the face or genitals, or persist beyond a year or two. Aggressive DIY destruction, by contrast, scars skin that was going to heal scar-free on its own.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical thought regards some skin growths as self-limiting with balanced regimen - a loose parallel within an interpretive framework of limited evidence. The clearance timeline above is the observed modern data.
Remember: incubation, growth, persistence, then often natural clearance within two years. Treat for pain, spread, site or persistence - and let painless stable warts in children often just be watched.
