Home remedies for warts

Introductory summary

Salicylic acid used patiently for weeks is the home treatment with evidence - cutting, burning and folk pastes only scar.

Home treatment for common and plantar warts can genuinely work - the evidence-backed option is pharmacy salicylic acid used patiently. Kitchen remedies, by contrast, mostly risk harm for unproven benefit.

The one home method with evidence: salicylic acid. Available as 17% liquids and 40% plasters. The technique is everything: soak the wart in warm water 10-15 minutes, gently file the dead surface with a pumice or emery board kept only for this purpose, protect the surrounding skin with petroleum jelly, apply the acid only on the wart, and repeat daily for 6-12 weeks. It works by slow chemical peeling and needs exactly this persistence - most failures come from quitting early. Stop and see a doctor if the area becomes very sore or infected.

Duct-tape occlusion has mixed evidence and is harmless to try for common warts: cover for about six days, soak, file, repeat for up to two months.

What NOT to do at home - the important list:

  • No cutting, picking, burning, or tying threads/hair around warts - infection, scars and spread follow.
  • No garlic, lime, banana peel, turmeric paste, nail polish, glue or other folk applications - unproven, and some chemically burn skin.
  • Never use corn/wart acid on the face, genitals, or broken skin.
  • Never treat genital warts at home - wrong virus behaviour, wrong site, needs a doctor.

Special cautions: diabetics and anyone with poor circulation or foot numbness must not self-treat plantar warts - a small chemical burn can become a serious foot ulcer; this is a podiatry/dermatology job. Immuno-suppressed people should be treated professionally from the start.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): traditional home applications for warts exist within an interpretive framework of limited evidence and carry the same burn-and-scar cautions as any caustic approach. The salicylic protocol above is the supported home path.

Remember: salicylic acid, daily, with soaking and filing, for weeks - that is the home treatment that works. Everything sharp, burning or folk-derived risks more than the wart ever did. Diabetics: hands off, see a doctor.
