Medicines and Products for Cholera

Introductory summary
ORS treats most cholera outright; zinc for children, IV fluids for the severe, antibiotics only for the hospitalized.
Cholera's medicine shelf is dominated by one product - oral rehydration salts - with a short list of hospital medicines behind it. The honest picture:
ORS (the product that owns this disease)
- WHO-formula ORS sachets: the precise glucose-salt-electrolyte balance that pulls water back into the body through the gut wall
- It treats most cholera completely - not a home remedy beside medicine, it IS the medicine
- Stock it at home; every Indian pharmacy has it for a few rupees
Zinc (for children)
Zinc supplements for 10-14 days shorten and soften childhood diarrhea and protect the following months - standard pediatric advice in any acute watery diarrhea including cholera.
IV fluids (the hospital's arm)
Ringer's lactate run fast: for severe dehydration, shock, or uncontrollable vomiting. This is the rescue that turns cholera gravis from deadly to recoverable - minutes and hours matter, and only a facility can do it.
Antibiotics (narrow role)
- Useful only for severe or hospitalized cases: they shorten illness and bacterial shedding by 1-2 days (doxycycline single dose is typical; azithromycin for children and pregnant women)
- Not needed for mild cases doing well on ORS; not for self-medication
What to avoid
- Anti-diarrheal stopping agents (loperamide): inappropriate - the fluid must exit
- Self-prescribed antibiotics "just in case"
- Any product claiming to treat cholera that is not fluids, zinc or a prescribed antibiotic
The vaccine (prevention product)
Oral cholera vaccines exist and are used in outbreak campaigns and for travel to high-risk zones - two doses, protection for a few years. Not part of India's routine immunization; discuss with a doctor for outbreak areas, flood relief work or high-risk travel.
One-line summary
ORS sachets treat most cholera outright, zinc helps children, IV fluids rescue the severe, antibiotics only for the hospitalized - everything else on the shelf is noise.
