Home Remedies for Cholera

Introductory summary
ORS sipped continuously, continued feeding, strict hand hygiene - home care holds mild cholera; dehydration signs mean hospital.
In cholera, home remedies have one supreme form - the homemade rehydration drink - and one supreme limit: dehydration signs mean hospital. Everything else is detail around those two facts.
ORS first, always (the remedy that saves lives)
- Packet ORS: keep sachets at home; one packet in the stated amount of clean water, sipped continuously - after every loose stool, adults about 200-400 ml, children less but often
- Homemade version (when no packet): 6 level teaspoons sugar + half a level teaspoon salt in 1 liter of clean water - measure, do not guess; too much salt harms
- Keep sipping even if vomiting: small frequent sips stay down better than gulps
- Continue normal feeding alongside: food does not worsen the diarrhea; starving helps nothing
Supporting home measures
- Rice water, thin dal water, coconut water: reasonable companions to ORS, not replacements - ORS has the precise salt-sugar balance
- Hygiene as remedy: the patient's stool and vomit are infectious - handwashing with soap after every contact, separate utensils, disinfected surfaces; home care that spreads the germ has failed
- Boiled or treated water for the entire household during an episode
What NOT to do at home
- Do not stop the diarrhea with anti-motility pills (loperamide): the fluid must leave; trapping it helps nothing
- Do not wait for stools to "settle on their own" once dehydration signs appear
- Do not give plain water alone to a purging child - it lacks salts; ORS or nothing
- No self-started antibiotics from the chemist
The leaving-home rule
Sunken eyes, poor skin pinch, extreme thirst, very little urine, weakness, drowsiness, cold hands - any one of these with profuse watery diarrhea means the hospital has already waited long enough. ORS in hand, go.
One-line summary
ORS sachets (or the measured sugar-salt liter) sipped continuously, continued feeding, strict hand hygiene - home care holds mild cholera; any dehydration sign sends it to hospital.
