Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Introductory summary
Blood in stool, changed bowel habits, anemia and weight loss - the colon cancer symptoms that should never be dismissed as piles.
Early colon cancer is usually silent - which is exactly why screening matters. When symptoms do appear, several deserve investigation rather than reassurance, especially after 45-50.
The bowel changes that matter
- Blood in or on the stool: bright red or dark - never assume "just piles" after 40 without evaluation
- Changed bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks: new persistent constipation, diarrhea, or narrower (pencil-thin) stools
- A persistent feeling of incomplete emptying
- Ongoing abdominal discomfort: cramps, gas, fullness
The whole-body signals
- Unexplained iron-deficiency anemia: in an older adult, slow invisible bleeding from a colon tumor is a classic cause - the anemia is sometimes the FIRST finding
- Unintentional weight loss
- Persistent fatigue (often the anemia speaking)
- Loss of appetite
Why the right side and left side differ
- Right-sided (ascending) tumors: bleed slowly and silently - anemia and fatigue dominate; stools may look normal
- Left-sided and rectal tumors: narrower stools, visible blood, changed habits, incomplete-emptying sensation appear earlier
The hard rule about piles
Piles (hemorrhoids) are common and do cause bright red blood - but self-diagnosing rectal bleeding as piles after 40 is the single commonest way colon cancer gets found late. The safe rule: any persistent bleeding gets a doctor's examination; most will indeed be piles, and the few that are not get caught early.
When it has spread
Advanced disease can add jaundice (liver), breathlessness (lungs), swelling of the abdomen, and bowel obstruction (severe pain, vomiting, no stools) - the last is an emergency.
One-line summary
Blood in stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained anemia or weight loss after 45 - investigate, do not assume piles; and remember early disease is silent, so screening precedes symptoms.
