Ayurvedic Treatment for Hernia
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of hernia (antravriddhi): a supportive adjunct only, with cautions. Surgery repairs a hernia.
A hernia is a physical gap in the muscle wall, and only a medical or surgical repair can close it. Ayurveda cannot repair a hernia, and it must never delay emergency care. Call 112 or 102 for a hard, painful bulge that cannot be pushed back, or for vomiting, fever or discoloured skin over it.
Ayurveda describes groin and scrotal swellings under vriddhi, including antravriddhi, and links them to aggravated vata. This is a traditional framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatment of hernia is lacking.
Where Ayurveda may play a supporting role
Only with a surgeon's knowledge:
- Digestive and bowel care: fibre-rich food, fluids and regular routine to avoid constipation and straining.
- Lifestyle: healthy weight, avoiding heavy lifting and quitting smoking.
- Gentle breathing and relaxation: for stress.
Safety points
- Do not rely on herbal pastes, oils, belts or bandages to treat a hernia. They do not repair it.
- Do not massage, press hard on or apply heat to a painful or firm hernia.
- Do not use laxative herbs or purgation procedures (virechana, basti) without medical advice when a hernia is present, because straining or abdominal pressure can worsen it.
- Avoid unsupervised panchakarma and strenuous therapies if you have a hernia.
- Some Ayurvedic products contain heavy metals. Buy only from reputable makers.
Key point
Ayurveda can support general health, but a hernia needs a surgeon's assessment.
Before your appointment
Note when you first noticed the bulge, whether it goes in when you lie down, and what brings it on, such as lifting, coughing or straining. List any pain, vomiting, constipation or urinary problems, and past surgeries. Bring your medicines, including blood thinners, and past reports. Ask about repair options, recovery and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
