Prevention of Hernia

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Preventing hernia: healthy weight, safe lifting, no straining, treating cough and constipation, and quitting smoking.

Not every hernia can be prevented, especially those present from birth. But you can reduce the strain that pushes tissue through a weak spot.

Everyday steps

  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Eat fibre and drink enough water to avoid constipation and straining.
  • Lift safely: bend your knees, keep the load close, avoid twisting and avoid lifting very heavy weights. Ask for help.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking weakens tissue and causes cough.
  • Treat a persistent cough early.
  • Treat urinary problems such as an enlarged prostate that cause straining.
  • Strengthen your core gently with exercise suited to your fitness. Avoid sudden heavy exertion.
  • Take care after surgery: follow your surgeon's advice about lifting and activity to avoid an incisional hernia.
  • Support the belly with your hands when coughing if you have had abdominal surgery.

During pregnancy

Avoid heavy lifting, treat constipation and follow your doctor's guidance on exercise.

If you already have a hernia

Avoid activities that cause bulging and seek medical advice about repair. Know the emergency signs and call 112 or 102 if the hernia becomes hard, very painful or discoloured, or if you have vomiting or fever.

Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda recommends a regular routine and avoiding constipation, which fits modern advice.

Key point

Avoiding strain, smoking and constipation lowers the risk of a hernia and of it returning after repair.

Before your appointment

Note when you first noticed the bulge, whether it goes in when you lie down, and what brings it on, such as lifting, coughing or straining. List any pain, vomiting, constipation or urinary problems, and past surgeries. Bring your medicines, including blood thinners, and past reports. Ask about repair options, recovery and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
