Introductory summary
Medicines and products for hernia: what eases reflux or constipation, truss and belt cautions, and why surgery repairs it.
No medicine can close a hernia. Surgery is the only way to repair it. Medicines are used for symptoms and related problems, and not as a cure.
Pain relief
Paracetamol or short courses of anti-inflammatory painkillers may ease discomfort, as advised by a doctor. Persistent or sudden pain should not be masked. See a doctor.
For constipation
Fibre supplements and gentle stool softeners or laxatives may be used on a doctor's advice to avoid straining. Avoid harsh purgatives.
For hiatal hernia and reflux
Antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors reduce acid and ease heartburn. Long-term use should be reviewed by a doctor.
Supports
- Trusses and supportive belts: may give comfort and are sometimes used when surgery has to wait. They do not cure a hernia and can cause skin problems if worn wrongly. Use only as advised by a surgeon.
Products to be careful with
- Herbal pastes, oils and tablets that claim to "dissolve" or "heal" a hernia have no reliable evidence.
- Some Ayurvedic products contain heavy metals.
Treatment that works: surgery
Surgical repair can be open or keyhole (laparoscopic), often with a mesh. Many repairs are day-case procedures. Your surgeon will advise on timing and type.
Emergency
A hernia that is hard, painful and cannot be pushed back needs emergency care. Call 112 or 102. Do not take painkillers and wait.
Key point
Medicines may relieve symptoms. Only surgery repairs the hernia.
Before your appointment
Note when you first noticed the bulge, whether it goes in when you lie down, and what brings it on, such as lifting, coughing or straining. List any pain, vomiting, constipation or urinary problems, and past surgeries. Bring your medicines, including blood thinners, and past reports. Ask about repair options, recovery and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
