Diet and Food Guidance for Hernia

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Hernia diet: smaller meals, fibre, fluids and reflux triggers to avoid, to reduce straining and pressure.

Diet cannot repair a hernia, but it can reduce pressure on the weak spot and ease related symptoms such as constipation and reflux.

To prevent constipation and straining

  • Fibre: whole grains, oats, millets, fruit, vegetables, pulses and salads.
  • Fluids: enough water through the day, unless your doctor has set a limit.
  • Regular meals and regular toilet habits.
  • Limit refined flour, heavy fried food and processed snacks, which can worsen constipation.

To keep a healthy weight

Extra weight raises pressure inside the belly. A balanced diet with smaller portions and regular activity as your doctor allows can help.

For hiatal hernia and reflux

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
  • Avoid lying down for at least 2 to 3 hours after eating.
  • Limit spicy, fried and fatty food, citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, caffeine and carbonated drinks if they trigger symptoms.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

Before and after surgery

Your surgeon will advise when to stop eating before the operation. After surgery, start with light food and build up. Include fibre and fluids to avoid straining.

When to seek help

Severe vomiting, belly swelling or inability to pass stool or gas need urgent care. Call 112 or 102 if a hernia becomes hard and painful.

Ayurvedic suggestion

Ayurveda recommends warm, light, easily digested food and avoiding constipating food. This is traditional advice, not a proven hernia treatment.

Key point

Fibre, fluids and healthy weight keep pressure on the hernia low.

Before your appointment

Note when you first noticed the bulge, whether it goes in when you lie down, and what brings it on, such as lifting, coughing or straining. List any pain, vomiting, constipation or urinary problems, and past surgeries. Bring your medicines, including blood thinners, and past reports. Ask about repair options, recovery and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
