Yoga and Exercise for Latex Allergy

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Yoga and exercise with latex allergy: latex-free mats and bands, safe activity and being prepared.

Yoga and exercise cannot treat latex allergy, but staying active helps general health and stress, as long as latex contact is avoided.

Check your equipment

Some exercise gear contains natural rubber latex.

  • Yoga mats: many are made of natural rubber. Choose mats labelled latex-free, such as PVC, TPE or cork-based.
  • Resistance bands: many are latex. Choose latex-free bands.
  • Swim caps and goggles: some use latex. Choose silicone options.
  • Gym gloves, grips, balls and elastic supports may contain latex.
  • Balloons and rubber-based exercise balls should be checked.

Helpful activity

  • Walking, cycling and swimming with latex-free gear
  • Gentle yoga with a latex-free mat and a cotton towel between you and the mat
  • Slow breathing and relaxation for stress

If you have skin symptoms

  • Wear loose, soft cotton clothes
  • Wash and moisturise after sweating
  • Avoid exercise until a rash settles if it is spreading or blistered

What to avoid

  • Using unmarked rubber equipment
  • Exercise during an allergic reaction
  • Being near latex balloons at group events

Be prepared

Carry your emergency medicine when exercising away from home, and tell friends, trainers and class leaders.

Ask first

Check with your doctor if you have asthma, heart disease or a history of severe reactions.

Key point

Exercise is good for you. Choose latex-free equipment and carry your emergency plan.

Before your appointment

Note which items or procedures caused symptoms, how soon symptoms began, and how long they lasted. List any reactions to bananas, avocado, kiwi, chestnut or other foods. Mention your job, past surgeries, catheters, asthma, eczema and other allergies. List medicines, supplements and herbal products, and bring any allergy card or adrenaline injector. Ask about allergy testing, latex-free products and an emergency action plan. Tell your doctor and dentist about the allergy before any procedure. Call 112 for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing.
