Introductory summary

Latex allergy home care: avoid latex, use latex-free products, skin care and emergency preparation.

There is no home remedy that cures latex allergy. Safe home care is mainly about avoiding latex and caring for the skin.

Avoid latex

  • Check labels of gloves, bandages, elastic bands, condoms, balloons, pacifiers and toys
  • Choose nitrile, vinyl or polyurethane products when latex is not needed
  • Use latex-free condoms (polyurethane or polyisoprene) if the allergy is confirmed
  • Ask for latex-free gloves from anyone who touches you, including cleaners and caregivers
  • Avoid blowing up or being near latex balloons

Skin care after a mild reaction

  • Wash the area with water and a mild soap
  • Use a cool compress for itching
  • Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser to dry, cracked skin
  • Keep nails short and avoid scratching

For workers who wear gloves

  • Switch to powder-free, non-latex gloves
  • Wear cotton liners under gloves if sweating
  • Wash and dry hands carefully
  • Report symptoms to occupational health

Be ready

  • Wear a medical alert bracelet or carry an allergy card
  • Keep your emergency medicines where you can reach them
  • Teach family, friends and colleagues what to do

What to avoid

  • Using steroid creams on the skin without a doctor
  • Waiting at home with swelling or breathing trouble
  • Home or herbal products as a replacement for avoidance and medical advice
  • Putting oils or home drops in the eyes or ears

Key point

Avoid latex, protect the skin and carry an emergency plan.

Before your appointment

Note which items or procedures caused symptoms, how soon symptoms began, and how long they lasted. List any reactions to bananas, avocado, kiwi, chestnut or other foods. Mention your job, past surgeries, catheters, asthma, eczema and other allergies. List medicines, supplements and herbal products, and bring any allergy card or adrenaline injector. Ask about allergy testing, latex-free products and an emergency action plan. Tell your doctor and dentist about the allergy before any procedure. Call 112 for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing.
