Ayurvedic treatment for sore throat

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic soothing measures for sore throat, with safety limits.

Ayurveda has a long tradition of caring for throat complaints, and several of its gentle measures are similar to modern home care. These can comfort a mild sore throat, but they do not treat strep throat or replace a doctor when warning signs are present.

How Ayurveda understands sore throat Sore throat (Kantha shotha or Gala shotha) is linked to vitiated Kapha and Pitta in the throat, often from cold drinks, dust, seasonal change or weakened digestion (Agni).

Commonly used traditional measures

  • Warm salt-water gargling, which is also recommended by modern doctors
  • Warm water sips through the day; avoiding very cold drinks
  • Turmeric in warm milk or warm water for gargling
  • Ginger, tulsi (holy basil) and black pepper tea
  • Liquorice (mulethi) tea or lozenges for soothing
  • Honey in warm water for cough and irritation (never for infants under 12 months)
  • Steam inhalation for adults with congestion (never for children)
  • Sitopaladi churna, talisadi churna and similar classical powders, traditionally used with honey

What evidence says Salt-water gargles, warm fluids, honey (over 1 year), ginger and liquorice have reasonable support for symptom relief. No herb has been shown to cure strep throat or shorten a bacterial infection.

Safety

  • Untreated strep can damage the heart and kidneys, so test and treat when symptoms suggest it.
  • No honey under 12 months; no steam for children; no oils or drops in infants.
  • Liquorice can raise blood pressure with heavy use.

When to see a doctor High fever, severe pain, breathing or swallowing difficulty, or symptoms over a week. Call 112 for breathing trouble.

Remember Ayurvedic home measures can soothe a mild sore throat; bacterial infection still needs medical care.
