Introductory summary
Home remedies for bloating that work: warm water, ajwain, ginger, peppermint, a walk after meals - plus what does not help and when home care is the wrong tool.
Most everyday bloating responds to simple measures - and the effective ones have been household knowledge in India for centuries, because they work.
During an episode
- Sip warm water slowly through the day; warmth relaxes the gut and moves gas
- Ajwain (half a teaspoon) with a pinch of rock salt, swallowed with warm water - the classic quick carminative
- Ginger tea, or a thin slice of fresh ginger with a little salt before meals
- Hing dissolved in warm water; some apply hing paste around the navel for infants' gas - a folk practice best discussed with a pediatrician for small babies
- Peppermint tea; peppermint oil has actual trial support in IBS-type symptoms
- A warm water bottle over the abdomen for spasm
- A ten-minute walk after meals - movement physically moves gas along
- Gentle knees-to-chest lying (Pawanmuktasana in yoga) helps trapped gas escape
- Passing gas when the urge comes: holding it in concentrates the problem. The classics listed suppressing flatus as a cause of distension - they were right
Habits that shrink episodes over time
- Eat slowly, chew well, talk less over food - swallowed air is half the battle
- Smaller meals; stop before the stuffed feeling
- Cut fizzy drinks, chewing gum and drinking through straws
- If constipation is in the picture, treat it - fluids, fiber, routine; a loaded colon ferments everything
- Regular meal times; avoid eating again before the previous meal has digested
What does not help
- Antacid syrups for bloating without acidity - gas is not acid
- Random "digestive" tonics and heavy herbal decoctions without knowing the cause
- Lying down immediately after meals
- Repeatedly eliminating whole food groups on suspicion alone - you end up malnourished and still bloated
When home remedies are the wrong tool
Persistent bloating most days for three weeks or more, bloating with weight loss, poor appetite, blood in stool, anemia, fever, severe constant pain, or vomiting with inability to pass gas or stool - none of these are home-remedy territory. In women, persistent bloating specifically needs a check for ovarian causes. Home remedies serve pattern 1 and 2 bloating; the red-flag patterns belong to a doctor.
