Ayurvedic Treatment for Fungal Infection

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurveda's kushtha and dadru view as support only, with cautions on pastes and hidden steroids.

Ayurveda groups many itchy, spreading skin conditions under kushtha. Ringworm-like patches are described as dadru, linked to aggravated Kapha and Pitta with impure blood (rakta). This page is a traditional, interpretive view and does not replace a doctor's diagnosis or antifungal treatment.

Traditional ideas

  • Cleanliness and dryness. Bathe regularly and dry skin folds well.
  • Cotton, loose clothing and avoiding damp clothes.
  • Light, fresh food, with less sweet, sour, oily and fermented food.
  • Neem and turmeric are traditionally used for skin conditions, in cooking and as washes.
  • Regular routine, adequate sleep and avoiding stress.

What the evidence says

Some laboratory studies show neem and turmeric have antifungal activity, but there are very few good human trials, and results do not show that they cure fungal infections. They are not a replacement for proven antifungal medicines.

Cautions

  • Do not apply turmeric, neem paste, garlic, lemon, toothpaste or other home mixtures on broken or inflamed skin. They can cause burns, allergy and delay proper treatment.
  • Avoid herbal powders or creams with unknown ingredients. Some Ayurvedic-labelled creams contain hidden steroids.
  • Do not use steroid-antifungal combination creams without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not delay treatment for scalp, nail, genital or widespread infection.
  • Avoid purifying (shodhana) treatments such as emetic or purgative therapy unless a qualified practitioner and doctor agree.
  • Tell your doctor about any product you use.

Using it well

A qualified vaidya can advise on diet and routine as an adjunct to medical treatment.

Seek care

Fever, spreading painful rash, diabetes, weak immunity or no improvement in two weeks need a doctor.
