Ayurvedic Treatment for HIV Infection

Ayurveda has no classical disease that matches HIV. Some practitioners describe a loss of ojas (vital essence) or immune strength, but this is an interpretive framework and not a proven explanation.

What Ayurveda cannot do

• Ayurveda and herbal products do not cure HIV.
• They do not remove the virus from the body.
• They cannot replace antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Stopping or delaying ART in favour of herbs can let the virus multiply, damage the immune system and be passed on to others.

What may be a supportive role

Under a doctor's supervision, general measures such as balanced food, rest, stress reduction, gentle yoga and breathing may help with wellbeing and quality of life. Evidence is limited.

Important cautions

• Some herbs interact with ART, making the medicines work less well or increasing side effects. Examples that have raised concern include St John's wort and some herbal supplements, including some used for immunity.
• Metal or mineral (rasa) preparations can harm the liver and kidneys, which ART also affects.
• Do not use herbs on your own to "boost" immunity. Immunity-boosting claims for HIV are not proven.
• Tell your HIV doctor about every herb, powder or supplement you take.
• Avoid anyone who claims to cure HIV.

Key point

Take ART exactly as prescribed. If you want Ayurvedic lifestyle support, use it only alongside it, with both your doctor and practitioner informed.

Before your appointment

Write down when you may have been exposed, and any symptoms such as fever, weight loss, cough or diarrhoea. List all medicines, herbs and supplements, and any pregnancy plans. Bring past test reports, including CD4 and viral load if you have them. Ask about testing, treatment, confidentiality, support services and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
