Medicines and Products for Impetigo

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Impetigo medicines: mupirocin or fusidic acid ointment, oral antibiotics, safe use, no steroid creams.

Impetigo is treated with antibiotics. The choice depends on how widespread the sores are, the age of the patient and local resistance patterns. A doctor should decide.

For limited sores

  • Topical antibiotic ointments: mupirocin or fusidic acid, applied to the sores for about 5 to 7 days, as prescribed.
  • Wash the area and remove loose crusts first, if the doctor advises.
  • Wash hands before and after applying.

For widespread, bullous or severe impetigo

  • Oral antibiotics such as cephalexin, flucloxacillin or others, depending on the doctor's choice and allergies.
  • A full course is important, even when the skin looks better.

Other measures

  • Antiseptic washes or soaks may be advised by some doctors.
  • Paracetamol for pain or fever, in the correct dose for age.

Safety

  • Do not use leftover or someone else's antibiotics.
  • Do not use steroid creams or combination creams unless prescribed.
  • Mupirocin and fusidic acid should not be overused, as bacteria can become resistant.
  • Tell the doctor about allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems and other medicines.
  • Newborns and young infants should be seen by a paediatrician before any treatment.

Ayurvedic and herbal products

Evidence that they treat impetigo is limited. Do not apply them on open sores or near the eyes.

Key point

See a doctor for the right antibiotic and complete the course.

Before your appointment

Note when the sores began, where they started, whether they ooze or crust, and whether anyone at home or school has similar sores. List any fever, itching, eczema, scabies, diabetes, allergies and medicines tried so far. Take a photo of the rash. Ask about the antibiotic, when it is safe to return to school and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
