Introductory summary
Impetigo in children, newborns, pregnancy and older adults, and how care and school return differ.
Impetigo is most common in children, but some groups need extra care.
Children
- Highest risk is at 2 to 5 years old.
- Keep your child at home until sores have crusted over, or until the doctor says it is safe, usually after 24 to 48 hours of treatment.
- Keep nails short, and cover sores.
- Do not use steroid creams, home pastes or oils on open sores.
- Do not put any drops or home preparations near the eyes.
- Do not give honey to a baby under 12 months.
- Do not give herbal remedies to infants unless a paediatrician advises it.
- Give paracetamol only in a dose suitable for age and weight.
Newborns and young infants
Any blistering or sores in a newborn need urgent review by a paediatrician, as the infection can spread quickly.
Pregnancy
- Tell your doctor you are pregnant before using any medicine.
- Topical antibiotics are often used, but need medical advice.
- Avoid herbal products on sores without medical advice.
Older adults
- Healing is slower, and cellulitis is more likely, particularly with diabetes or poor circulation.
- Leg sores need medical review.
People with diabetes, eczema or weak immunity
See a doctor early. Treatment may need to be longer.
Key point
Newborns, pregnant women and people with diabetes or weak immunity should see a doctor promptly.
Before your appointment
Note when the sores began, where they started, whether they ooze or crust, and whether anyone at home or school has similar sores. List any fever, itching, eczema, scabies, diabetes, allergies and medicines tried so far. Take a photo of the rash. Ask about the antibiotic, when it is safe to return to school and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
