How to Treat or Cure Impetigo

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How impetigo is treated: doctor review, antibiotics, skin care, stopping spread and when to follow up.

Impetigo can be cured, and most cases clear within about 1 to 2 weeks with proper treatment. It is a bacterial infection, so antibiotics are the main treatment.

Step 1: see a doctor

A doctor can confirm impetigo and rule out other skin conditions such as herpes, scabies, eczema or fungal infection.

Step 2: antibiotics

  • Limited sores: a prescribed antibiotic ointment, such as mupirocin or fusidic acid, for about 5 to 7 days
  • Widespread, bullous or severe disease: oral antibiotics for about 7 days, or as prescribed
  • Finish the course even if the skin looks better.

Step 3: skin care

  • Gently clean the sores with warm water and soap, and remove loose crusts.
  • Keep nails short and cover sores loosely.
  • Do not apply steroid creams or home pastes on open sores.

Step 4: stop the spread

  • Keep the person at home until the sores have crusted or 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics, as the doctor advises.
  • Use separate towels and wash bedding and clothes in hot water.

When to go back to the doctor

  • No improvement in 2 to 3 days
  • Fever, spreading redness, swelling or pain
  • Tea-coloured urine or puffy face a few weeks later
  • Frequent recurrences

Complementary care

Ayurveda may support general skin care. It does not replace antibiotics.

Key point

Early antibiotic treatment shortens the illness and stops the spread to others.

Before your appointment

Note when the sores began, where they started, whether they ooze or crust, and whether anyone at home or school has similar sores. List any fever, itching, eczema, scabies, diabetes, allergies and medicines tried so far. Take a photo of the rash. Ask about the antibiotic, when it is safe to return to school and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
