Introductory summary

Causes of impetigo: staph and strep bacteria entering broken skin, how it spreads and who is at higher risk.

Impetigo is a contagious skin infection caused by bacteria, most often Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep). It is common in young children, especially in warm, humid weather.

How the bacteria get in

Healthy skin carries bacteria and usually keeps them out. The infection starts when germs enter through a break in the skin, such as:

How it spreads

  • Direct contact with sores or the fluid from them
  • Sharing towels, clothes, bedding, toys or razors
  • Touching the sores and then other body parts, which spreads the rash
  • Close contact in schools, crèches, sports teams and crowded homes

What raises the risk

  • Age 2 to 5 years
  • Warm, humid climate and poor access to clean water
  • Crowded living conditions
  • Skin conditions such as eczema
  • Diabetes or weak immunity
  • Nasal carriage of staph bacteria

Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda describes weeping, crusting skin eruptions under conditions such as visarpa or pama, linked to pitta and kapha with rakta. This is an interpretive framework and not a proven explanation.

Key point

Impetigo is not a sign of poor character. It spreads easily, so treat sores early and wash hands often.

Before your appointment

Note when the sores began, where they started, whether they ooze or crust, and whether anyone at home or school has similar sores. List any fever, itching, eczema, scabies, diabetes, allergies and medicines tried so far. Take a photo of the rash. Ask about the antibiotic, when it is safe to return to school and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
