What is otitis media? (Introduction)

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

What otitis media (middle ear infection) is, who gets it, main forms and when to see a doctor.

Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum. It is one of the most common childhood illnesses and a leading reason for doctor visits and antibiotic prescriptions in young children. Adults can get it too, but less often.

How it happens

The Eustachian tube links the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. In children it is short and more horizontal, so it blocks easily during colds. Fluid then builds up behind the eardrum, and germs can grow in it, causing pain and sometimes fever.

Main forms

  • Acute otitis media: a sudden infection with pain and often fever
  • Otitis media with effusion: fluid behind the eardrum without active infection
  • Chronic otitis media: long-lasting infection, often with a hole in the eardrum and discharge

Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda describes ear discharge and pain under Karnashula and Karnasrava, linked to Kapha and Pitta imbalance. This is an interpretive framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatment of middle ear infection is limited, and it should not delay medical care.

Outlook

Most ear infections settle within a few days, often without antibiotics, but need a doctor's assessment, especially in babies.

See a doctor if a child has ear pain, fever, ear pulling with irritability, or ear discharge. Seek urgent care for a baby under 6 months with fever, swelling behind the ear, a stiff neck or marked drowsiness.

When to get help

See a doctor or ENT clinic if ear pain, discharge or hearing change does not settle in a couple of days, if infections keep coming back, or if you are unsure about any medicine or drop. Early assessment protects hearing and helps avoid unnecessary treatment.

Remember

Treat ear pain as a reason to see a doctor, not a reason to put anything in the ear.
