Ayurvedic treatment for otitis media

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of ear pain and discharge, and why ear drops need a doctor's check first.

In Ayurveda, ear pain and ear discharge are discussed under Karnashula and Karnasrava. This page describes the traditional approach. It is an interpretive framework, evidence from good trials is limited, and it must not delay medical care for ear infection.

Traditional understanding

Kapha and Pitta are said to accumulate in the ear and cause pain, swelling and pus. Vata may add severe pain. Cold exposure, head baths in cold weather and heavy foods are considered triggers.

Approaches mentioned in texts

  • Karnapoorana: instilling warm medicated oil or herbal juice drops
  • Dhoomapana, Nasya and Gandusha: nasal and oral therapies for the head and throat
  • Herbs often mentioned: Tulsi, Haridra (turmeric), Shunthi (ginger) and Nirgundi

Important safety points

  • Do not put oil, juice or drops in the ear if the eardrum may be perforated, if there is discharge, or if pain follows a recent injury. This is the main reason to see a doctor first.
  • Never use these in babies and young children without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not use sharp objects or cotton buds to clean the ear.
  • Do not delay antibiotics when a doctor advises them.

What research says

A few small studies of herbal ear drops reported some pain relief in children. They were not large or strong enough to be a basis for treatment.

See a doctor if there is discharge, hearing loss, fever or pain for more than a day.

When to get help

See a doctor or ENT clinic if ear pain, discharge or hearing change does not settle in a couple of days, if infections keep coming back, or if you are unsure about any medicine or drop. Early assessment protects hearing and helps avoid unnecessary treatment.

Remember

If you wish to use Ayurvedic care, do so alongside a medical assessment, not instead of it.
