Introductory summary
Possible complications of otitis media, including hearing loss and mastoiditis, and emergency signs.
Most ear infections clear without lasting harm. Complications are uncommon but can be serious, especially with untreated or chronic infection.
Ear-related complications
- Eardrum perforation: usually heals in days to weeks, but may persist
- Hearing loss: temporary with fluid, or permanent after repeated or chronic disease
- Glue ear: long-lasting fluid that can affect speech and learning in children
- Cholesteatoma: a growth behind the eardrum that can erode bone
- Tympanosclerosis: scarring of the eardrum
Spread of infection
- Mastoiditis: infection of the bone behind the ear, causing redness, swelling and pain behind the ear
- Facial nerve weakness: drooping of one side of the face
- Labyrinthitis: dizziness and hearing loss from inner ear involvement
- Meningitis, brain abscess or lateral sinus thrombosis: rare but life-threatening
Developmental effects
Repeated hearing loss in young children can delay speech and language and affect school performance.
Ayurvedic view
Traditional texts describe chronic discharge and deafness (Badhirya) as consequences of neglected ear disease. This is an interpretive view and does not replace medical monitoring.
Emergency signs
Swelling or redness behind the ear, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, repeated vomiting, seizure, facial droop or high fever call for immediate hospital care.
See a doctor if hearing seems reduced, speech is delayed, or ear discharge continues.
Remember
Prompt treatment and follow-up protect hearing and prevent rare serious complications.
