Home remedies for otitis media

Introductory summary

Safe home care for ear infection: pain relief, warm compress and what not to put in the ear.

Home care can ease discomfort while an ear infection runs its course. It does not replace a doctor's assessment.

Safe measures

  • Pain relief: paracetamol or ibuprofen in age-appropriate doses, as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not give aspirin to children.
  • Warm compress: a warm, dry cloth on the outer ear can soothe pain
  • Rest and fluids: keep the child comfortable and well hydrated
  • Upright position: sleeping with the head slightly raised may ease pressure
  • Feeding: breastfeed or feed a baby upright, and avoid bottle feeding lying flat
  • Keep ears dry: use a cotton plug with petroleum jelly or an earplug when bathing if there is discharge or a perforation
  • Smoke-free home: avoid tobacco smoke near children

Do not do

  • Do not put oil, garlic, onion juice, herbal drops or alcohol in the ear without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use cotton buds, pins or ear candles
  • Do not syringe or flush the ear if there is discharge or a perforation
  • Do not give honey to babies under 12 months

Watchful waiting

Doctors sometimes wait 48 to 72 hours before using antibiotics in mild cases in older children. Pain relief is used meanwhile, with a clear plan to return if no improvement.

See a doctor if a baby under 6 months has fever, pain lasts beyond 2 days, discharge appears, or there is swelling behind the ear.

When to get help

See a doctor or ENT clinic if ear pain, discharge or hearing change does not settle in a couple of days, if infections keep coming back, or if you are unsure about any medicine or drop. Early assessment protects hearing and helps avoid unnecessary treatment.

Remember

Simple pain relief and comfort are safe. Anything placed in the ear is not.
