Diet and food guidance for otitis media
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Feeding and diet habits for otitis media, with child safety cautions.
Diet does not treat an ear infection, but good nutrition and feeding habits support recovery and may lower the chance of repeat infection.
Helpful habits
- Breastfeeding: exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months lowers the risk of ear infections in babies
- Feeding position: hold babies upright, and do not prop a bottle or feed lying flat
- Fluids: offer plenty of water, milk or oral rehydration if the child has fever
- Balanced meals: fruit, vegetables, pulses, whole grains, eggs, dairy for immune support
- Soft foods: if chewing hurts the jaw or ear, offer soft, easy food
- Vitamin A and D: make sure the child's diet provides these. Supplements only as advised.
Things to limit
- Sugary drinks and excess sweets
- Very cold drinks or ice cream if they bother the throat during a cold
- Exposure to known food allergens if allergy is suspected. Ask your doctor.
Ayurvedic view
Traditional advice favours warm, light, freshly cooked food, such as soups, khichdi and ginger or tulsi tea for older children and adults, and avoids cold, heavy, fried and curd-based foods during a cold. This is a traditional framework, and evidence is limited.
Child safety
No honey for children under 12 months. No herbal teas or kadha for babies. Check with a doctor before giving herbs to young children.
See a doctor if a child refuses to feed or drink, shows signs of dehydration, or loses weight.
When to get help
See a doctor or ENT clinic if ear pain, discharge or hearing change does not settle in a couple of days, if infections keep coming back, or if you are unsure about any medicine or drop. Early assessment protects hearing and helps avoid unnecessary treatment.
Remember
Breastfeeding, upright feeding and balanced meals are the dietary steps with the best support.
