Diet and food guidance for sciatica

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet to support recovery and a healthy weight with sciatica.

No diet can cure sciatica, but eating well supports healing, helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces extra load on the spine. Some foods may also calm inflammation a little.

Foods that help

  • Colourful vegetables and fruit rich in antioxidants, such as spinach, carrot, berries, citrus and tomatoes.
  • Whole grains, pulses and nuts for fibre and magnesium.
  • Oily fish, flaxseed and walnuts for omega-3 fats, which may help reduce inflammation.
  • Calcium and vitamin D sources such as milk, curd, ragi, sesame and leafy greens for bone and disc health.
  • Protein from dal, eggs, fish, paneer and lean meat to repair tissue.
  • Vitamin B12 and B-complex foods such as dairy, eggs and fortified foods for nerve health. Deficiency can add to nerve symptoms, so a blood test may be useful.
  • Spices such as turmeric and ginger in cooking.
  • Plenty of water to keep discs and tissues hydrated.

Foods to limit

  • Sugary drinks and sweets, and refined flour products.
  • Deep-fried and processed food.
  • Excess salt and alcohol.
  • Large amounts of red meat.

Weight Extra weight adds pressure on the lower spine. Even modest weight loss can reduce back and leg pain over time.

Diabetes If you have diabetes, keeping blood sugar controlled protects nerves.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda advises warm, moist, lightly spiced food for Vata, and limiting cold, dry, raw and gas-forming foods such as large amounts of beans and cabbage. This is a traditional guideline with limited research support.

Supplements Do not start high-dose vitamins or herbal supplements without medical advice. Some interact with medicines.

Remember A balanced diet, steady weight and regular movement support recovery. See a doctor if numbness or weakness is increasing.
