Symptoms of Celiac Disease

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Loose motions and bloating, or hidden anemia, fatigue, mouth ulcers, weak bones, infertility - celiac's many masks.

Celiac disease wears many masks. The classic picture is digestive; the more common adult picture is not. Knowing both ends the years of missed diagnosis.

The classic digestive picture

  • Chronic or recurrent loose motions, sometimes pale, bulky and foul-smelling
  • Bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort after meals
  • Poor appetite and weight loss despite eating
  • In children: a pot belly with thin limbs, irritability, poor weight gain

The non-digestive picture (often the only one)

  • Iron-deficiency anemia that does not respond well to iron tablets - in adults this is one of the commonest presentations
  • Deep fatigue, brain fog, low mood
  • Recurrent mouth ulcers
  • Bone and joint pains, early osteoporosis, fractures from small falls
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Delayed puberty, irregular periods, infertility or repeated miscarriage
  • Dermatitis herpetiformis: intensely itchy small blisters on elbows, knees, buttocks, scalp - the skin form of celiac

The silent form

Some people have the intestinal damage with no felt symptoms at all - found only through family screening or an anemia workup. Silent is not safe: the damage and its long-term risks continue quietly.

In children, watch the growth clock

A child who stops gaining weight, grows slowly, has a swollen belly, chronic loose motions or unusual irritability around wheat foods should be tested. Caught early and fed gluten-free, children catch up completely.

When to see a doctor promptly

Persistent diarrhea with weight loss, severe anemia, blood in stool, or a child falling off the growth curve - do not self-treat these as "weak digestion"; get the celiac test and a proper evaluation.

One-line summary

Beyond loose motions and bloating, celiac disease hides as stubborn anemia, fatigue, mouth ulcers, weak bones, infertility, an itchy rash or a child not growing - any of these deserves the blood test.
