Home Remedies for Goiter
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Home care for goiter includes iodised salt and regular medicines. Kelp, iodine drops and neck massage are not advised.
Home care cannot shrink most goiters or replace thyroid tests. It can support general health while you follow medical advice.
What may help
- Use iodised salt in normal cooking amounts, unless your doctor advises otherwise
- Take medicines regularly, such as levothyroxine on an empty stomach, as advised
- Keep regular check-ups and blood tests
- Eat balanced meals and stay active
- Sleep well and manage stress
- Check your neck now and then in front of a mirror, and report any change
Common remedies and cautions
- Seaweed, kelp or iodine drops: extra iodine can worsen some thyroid conditions, so do not take them without advice
- Neck massage or pressing the lump: does not shrink a goiter and may irritate it
- Herbal pastes or heat on the neck: unproven
- Stopping thyroid tablets because you feel well can cause relapse
- Avoid home remedies for infants and children without a doctor's advice
Swallowing tips
If a large goiter makes swallowing hard, eat soft food in small bites and see a doctor soon.
When home care is not enough
A new lump, fast growth, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or breathing needs medical review. Call 112 or 102 for difficulty breathing.
Before your appointment
Carry earlier thyroid reports, a list of medicines and supplements, and notes on swelling, weight change, heartbeat, mood and periods. Tell your doctor about any family history of thyroid disease and whether you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This helps pick the right tests and treatment.
