Yoga and Exercise for Goiter

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Gentle yoga and exercise support energy and stress in thyroid disease but do not shrink a goiter or replace treatment.

Yoga and exercise cannot shrink a goiter or replace thyroid treatment. Regular gentle activity helps energy, mood, weight and stress, which matter in thyroid disease.

Helpful activities

  • Walking, cycling or swimming: 30 minutes on most days
  • Slow breathing: anulom vilom and deep belly breathing for stress
  • Gentle stretching and relaxation

Yoga poses often practised

  • Tadasana (mountain pose)
  • Bhujangasana (cobra pose) gently, without straining the neck
  • Setu bandhasana (bridge pose) with care
  • Shavasana to end and relax

Claims about neck poses

Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) and Matsyasana are often said to help the thyroid. There is no good proof for this. Avoid strong neck flexion or inversion if you have a large goiter, neck pain, high blood pressure or an overactive thyroid.

Cautions

  • With an overactive thyroid, avoid intense exercise until hormone levels are controlled
  • Do not hold your breath or strain
  • Stop if you feel breathless, dizzy or have a racing heart

Key points

  • Activity supports health but does not treat the goiter.
  • Take prescribed thyroid medicine regularly.
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs urgent care. Call 112 or 102.

Before your appointment

Carry earlier thyroid reports, a list of medicines and supplements, and notes on swelling, weight change, heartbeat, mood and periods. Tell your doctor about any family history of thyroid disease and whether you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This helps pick the right tests and treatment.
