Introductory summary
Itching home care: moisturiser, cool compress, short nails, soft clothes and what to avoid such as steroid creams.
Simple skin care can reduce itching from dry skin, mild eczema and bites. It does not replace a doctor when itching is severe or has no clear cause.
Soothe the skin
- Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser 2 to 3 times a day, best within 3 minutes of bathing
- Use a cool, damp cloth or cold pack wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes
- Have short lukewarm baths, not hot showers
- Use a mild, soap-free cleanser
- Colloidal oatmeal baths can ease dry itching
- Pat the skin dry, do not rub
Stop the scratching
- Keep nails short and smooth
- Wear soft cotton gloves at night if you scratch in sleep
- Press or pat the area instead of scratching
- Distract yourself with a cold drink or a short walk
Clothing and surroundings
- Wear loose cotton clothes and avoid wool and rough fabrics
- Wash clothes in mild detergent and rinse well
- Keep the room cool and use a humidifier in dry weather
Traditional kitchen remedies
Coconut oil is commonly used on dry skin. Aloe vera gel may feel cooling. Test a small patch first and stop if the skin gets worse. Evidence for these is limited.
What to avoid
- Do not use steroid creams without a doctor's advice
- Do not use harsh scrubs, perfume or alcohol-based lotions
- Do not apply oils or home drops in the eyes or ears
- Do not use home remedies on infected, oozing skin
When to see a doctor
Itching lasting more than 2 weeks, itching all over without a rash, or itching with yellow skin, weight loss or night sweats.
Key point
Moisturise, cool the skin and protect it from scratching.
Before your appointment
Note when the itching began, where it is, what makes it better or worse, and whether it is worse at night. List all medicines, creams, herbs and soaps you use, and any new foods or products. Mention others at home with itching, rash, weight loss, night sweats, yellow eyes, dark urine or tiredness. Bring photos of any rash that comes and goes. Ask about tests, the safest treatment and the signs that need urgent care. Call 112 for swelling of the face or lips or trouble breathing.
