Ayurvedic Treatment for Itching
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of itching (kandu): dosha links, traditional herbs and care, limited evidence and cautions.
In Ayurveda, itching is called kandu. It is seen as a symptom of many skin conditions and also as a condition in its own right.
Ayurvedic understanding
- Kandu is linked mainly with Kapha and Pitta imbalance and with impure blood (rakta dushti).
- Dry, rough, cracked skin with itching is linked to Vata.
- Itching with redness and burning is linked to Pitta.
- Itching with oozing and thick discharge is linked to Kapha.
Traditional approaches
- Treating the cause and the diet, with blood-purifying and cooling measures
- Herbs often named in texts include neem, turmeric (haridra), manjistha and khadira, usually taken as preparations prescribed by a practitioner
- Medicated oils such as coconut oil or neem oil are used on the skin for dry, non-infected itching
- Panchakarma procedures such as virechana are described for chronic skin disease, under supervision
What the evidence says
Research on Ayurvedic treatment for itching is limited. Some small studies of herbs such as neem and turmeric exist, but quality is mixed. These are traditional approaches and should be an adjunct, not a replacement for diagnosis and modern treatment.
Cautions
- Do not treat itching with yellow eyes, weight loss or night sweats at home. See a doctor first.
- Do not use herbal pastes, oils or powders on broken or infected skin without advice.
- Patch test any new oil or paste on a small area first.
- Do not give herbal remedies to infants unless a paediatrician advises.
- Never put oils or drops in the eyes or ears.
- Tell your doctor about herbs you use, as some can affect the liver.
Key point
Ayurveda may help with skin care and lifestyle, but the cause of itching should be found first.
Before your appointment
Note when the itching began, where it is, what makes it better or worse, and whether it is worse at night. List all medicines, creams, herbs and soaps you use, and any new foods or products. Mention others at home with itching, rash, weight loss, night sweats, yellow eyes, dark urine or tiredness. Bring photos of any rash that comes and goes. Ask about tests, the safest treatment and the signs that need urgent care. Call 112 for swelling of the face or lips or trouble breathing.
