Introductory summary
Causes and risk factors of sinusitis, from colds to allergies.
Sinusitis is inflammation of the lining of the sinuses, the air-filled spaces in the bones around the nose, cheeks and forehead. Normally the sinuses drain mucus into the nose through small openings. When these openings swell or get blocked, mucus is trapped and germs can grow, leading to pain, pressure and congestion.
Main causes
- Viral infection: the common cold is the most frequent trigger. Most acute sinusitis is viral and clears on its own.
- Bacterial infection: sometimes follows a cold, when trapped mucus becomes infected.
- Fungal infection: uncommon, usually in people with weak immunity or diabetes.
- Allergies such as hay fever, which cause nasal swelling.
Structural problems
- Deviated nasal septum.
- Nasal polyps (soft growths in the nose lining).
- Enlarged adenoids in children.
- Narrow drainage channels.
Triggers and risk factors
- Smoking and exposure to smoke, dust, fumes and air pollution.
- Dry air, or sudden changes in temperature.
- Swimming or diving in dirty water.
- Dental infections in the upper teeth.
- Asthma, cystic fibrosis and weak immunity.
- Frequent colds, particularly in children who attend nursery or school.
- Air travel and altitude changes, which can block sinus openings.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda describes sinus disease as pratishyaya or dushta pratishyaya, linked with aggravated Kapha, sometimes with Vata or Pitta, which blocks the channels of the head. This is a traditional framework and not a medical explanation.
When to see a doctor See a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days without improving, if they get worse after initially improving, or if you have a high fever or severe pain. Seek urgent care for swelling around the eyes, vision change, severe headache or neck stiffness.
Remember Most sinusitis starts with a cold and gets better without antibiotics. Treating allergies and avoiding smoke reduces the risk.
