Diet and food guidance for sinusitis

Introductory summary
Fluids and diet to support recovery from sinusitis.
There is no diet that cures sinusitis. Good fluids and nutrition can help thin mucus, support immunity and make you more comfortable. A few people also notice that certain foods trigger nasal symptoms.
Helpful habits
- Drink plenty of fluids such as water, warm soup, herbal tea and warm lemon water, which keep mucus thinner and easier to drain.
- Eat fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C, such as citrus, amla, guava, bell pepper and tomatoes.
- Include protein from dal, eggs, fish and chicken soup to support recovery. Warm chicken or vegetable soup can feel soothing.
- Add ginger, garlic, turmeric, black pepper and tulsi to cooking, as many people find them comforting. Evidence for treating sinusitis is limited.
- Eat foods with zinc and vitamin D, such as nuts, seeds, eggs and dairy, in a balanced diet.
Foods and drinks to limit
- Alcohol, which can swell the nasal lining and dehydrate.
- Very cold drinks, ice cream and chilled food, if they worsen your congestion. This varies from person to person.
- Highly processed and sugary food.
- Foods you know trigger allergy symptoms. If you suspect a food allergy, get it tested instead of cutting out food groups.
- Smoking and smoky environments.
Spicy food Hot chillies and spicy soups may thin mucus briefly, though the effect is short, and they can upset acid reflux, which sometimes worsens sinus symptoms.
Reflux Late heavy meals and acid reflux can irritate the throat and nose. Eat dinner early if you are prone to it.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda suggests warm, light, freshly cooked food, and avoiding cold, heavy, curd-based and sweet foods at night to calm Kapha. This is traditional guidance with limited research support.
Remember Fluids, rest and a balanced diet support recovery. Persistent symptoms need medical review.
