Ayurvedic treatment for sinusitis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of pratishyaya as an adjunct, with safety notes.

Ayurveda describes sinus problems mainly under pratishyaya (cold and nasal congestion) and dushta pratishyaya or peenasa (chronic sinus conditions). In the traditional view, aggravated Kapha, together with Vata or Pitta, blocks the channels of the head and nose. This is an interpretive framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatments of sinusitis is limited, so they should be an adjunct to proper medical care and never a substitute when infection or complications are possible.

Traditional approach

  • Steam inhalation with a few herbs, and warm fomentation of the face, for comfort.
  • Nasya, the application of medicated oil or ghee in the nostrils, such as anu taila. It should be done under guidance and is avoided during acute infection, fever, pregnancy and in young children.
  • Jala neti or saline nasal rinsing, which is also supported by modern research for nasal symptoms when done with clean water.
  • Herbs such as tulsi, ginger (shunthi), black pepper, turmeric, licorice (yashtimadhu) and trikatu are commonly used.
  • Warm, light food, and avoiding cold drinks, curd at night, ice cream and cold exposure.

What research says Saline nasal irrigation has reasonable evidence for easing symptoms. Evidence for most herbal formulations is limited and varies in quality.

Safety points

  • Use only boiled and cooled or distilled water for nasal rinsing. Unsafe water has caused rare but serious infections.
  • Do not put oils or powders in the nose of infants and young children.
  • Avoid strong snuffs and harsh powders, which can burn the nasal lining.
  • Tell your doctor about any herb you take, especially with blood pressure or blood thinning medicine.

When to see a doctor Symptoms lasting over 10 days, high fever, severe facial pain, or swelling around the eyes need medical care.

Remember Steam, saline rinsing and warm food bring comfort. Persistent or severe symptoms need a doctor.
