Complications and risks of sinusitis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Complications of sinusitis and warning signs for urgent care.

Most sinusitis clears without problems. Complications are uncommon, but they can be serious when the infection spreads beyond the sinuses. Early treatment and attention to warning signs reduce the risk.

Chronic sinusitis Acute inflammation that does not settle can become chronic sinusitis, with long-term blockage, facial pressure, loss of smell and poor sleep. Nasal polyps may form.

Spread to nearby structures

  • Orbital cellulitis or abscess: infection spreads to the tissues around the eye, causing swelling, redness, pain on eye movement, bulging eye and vision changes. This needs emergency care.
  • Osteomyelitis: infection of the facial or skull bones, such as the forehead (Pott's puffy tumour), with swelling and fever.
  • Meningitis or brain abscess: very rare, causing severe headache, neck stiffness, high fever, vomiting, confusion or seizures. Call 112.
  • Cavernous sinus thrombosis: a rare, life-threatening blood clot behind the eye.

Effects on daily life

  • Loss or reduced sense of smell and taste, which may be temporary or lasting.
  • Poor sleep, tiredness and low mood.
  • Frequent headaches and missed school or work.
  • Repeated antibiotic use may cause side effects and resistance.

Related conditions Ear infections, asthma flare-ups, sore throat and cough from post-nasal drip.

Higher-risk groups People with diabetes, weak immunity, children with enlarged adenoids and those with a history of nasal polyps or structural problems.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Texts mention that neglected head and nose disease can become chronic and affect the senses. This is a conceptual parallel and does not replace medical care.

When to get urgent help Seek care immediately for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, drowsiness or a very high fever.

Remember See a doctor early if sinus symptoms do not improve in ten days.
